João Lopes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at the School of Psychology, University of Minho. Between 1987 and 1995, he was a professor at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. Since 1995, he has been a professor at the University of Minho. His fundamental areas of interest, research, and community service include Learning Problems, Behavioral Problems, Teaching Problems, Classroom Organization and Management, Reading and Writing Instruction, Classroom Discipline, and Child and Adolescent Abuse.
Other relevant activities and positions:
April 2015 - 2018: President of the Scientific-Pedagogical Council for the Continuing Education of Teachers (CCPFCP). The CCPFCP is the national body responsible for accrediting the continuing education of teachers, including master's and postgraduate university courses.
2014 - 2018: Member of the General Council of IAVE (Educational Assessment Institute). IAVE is responsible for developing national exams for public school students in Portugal, from the 4th to the 12th grade. Additionally, it is responsible for adapting national tests such as PISA, TIMSS, TALIS, among others.
2015-2019: Director of the Department of Applied Psychology - School of Psychology - University of Minho.
2014: Director of the Doctoral Program in Applied Psychology for CPLP countries, at the School of Psychology, University of Minho.
2015-2018: Representative of Portugal in CERI (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation) - OECD.
