A convite do Laboratório de Psicoterapia e Psicopatologia; e com apresentação da Profª Sónia Gonçalves, o Dr. Tim Kaiser traz-nos a conferência " The leap from the lab to the real world: causal inference for naturalistic outcome data in psychotherapy", no dia 29 de novembro, na Sala de Atos do IE, às 12h15.
Title
The leap from the lab to the real world: causal inference for naturalistic outcome data in psychotherapy
Resume
The efficacy of psychotherapy under well-controlled clinical trial conditions is well documented for a variety of disorders. Due to limited external validity of these trials, the inclusion of data on its effectiveness under routine conditions was long proposed as a necessary additional perspective. However, data from these settings are usually evaluated purely as pre-post comparisons, as control groups and randomized allocation can hardly be established under these conditions. Additionally, the patient samples in routine care are much more heterogenous due to liberal inclusion criteria. The uptake of methods of causal inference under these challenging conditions was limited in psychotherapy research. In this talk, some research designs for routine care are presented. Recently developed “causal learning” algorithms that were specifically developed for this task are presented. It is shown how causal learning can be applied to gain insights about the effectiveness of psychotherapy compared to control conditions, but also about head-to-head comparisons of different methods. Additionally, it will be shown how personalized treatment allocation can lead to improved therapy outcomes under certain conditions.
